Do Your Goals Measure Up?

New Year’s resolutions are often forgotten by February and best intentions don’t always happen. That’s why setting strong goals are so important! So to kick 2017 off right, let’s walk through how to set goals the right way.

Goals need to be specific, measureable, and time-limited.

You may have a goal to grow the presence of your business on social media in 2017. But what does that really mean? It’s not specific, so let’s get more precise: which social media platform do you want to focus on? Let’s say it’s Facebook.

How will you measure a growing Facebook presence? Is your goal to be intentional about posting and sharing more—and if so, how much, specifically? Or will you measure growth in terms of shares or new “likes”? Adding a measurable element allows you to track your progress toward where you want to be.

Finally, your goals need to have a time limit. Without a time limit, you lose the motivation of working toward a deadline. Have you heard the saying, “There are only seven days in a week, and ‘someday’ isn’t one of them”? Having a time limit is crucial and really defines your goal.

A strong goal would be, “My goal is to gain 200 Facebook likes by June 15.”

Here are some other examples of strong goals:

“I will increase orders for my business by fifty percent by December 31.”

“I will lose 20 pounds by June 30.”

“I will complete a half marathon in under two hours by April 30.”

“I will save $2,000 for Disney World by May 1.”

Be sure you write your goals down and look at them often. Zig Ziglar said, “People say motivation doesn’t last. Well neither does bathing—that’s why we recommend it daily.” Ha!
