No matter what dream you’re trying to build, nothing will get you farther than your ability to be scrappy.
Scrappy people use what they have, make sacrifices, and build their dreams brick by brick.
Patricia Kelikani embodies this. Patricia had a clear vision for what she wanted her life to look like once she had kids. She wanted the freedom to quit her full-time corporate job without giving up the work she loves completely.
She wanted to use her gifting in video production to work and earn an income on her terms—and that’s exactly what she’s been able to accomplish.
I caught up with Patricia to learn exactly how she turned her dream into her reality. Y’all, it’s so inspiring! Check it out.
Christy Wright: Patricia, I love your business. Tell me about why you first started.
Patricia Kelikani: Since I could remember, I’ve wanted to be a part-time working mom when I had kids. So, when I got pregnant with my first son about five years ago, I talked with my awesome boss at my corporate job and told her about my dream to be a part-time working mom, and she was super supportive. When I resigned from that position and started my own business, the company I worked at for 12 years immediately became one of my biggest clients.
Through my business, Kelikani Consulting, I create custom videos to help companies make more money, and I produce an Emmy Award-winning television series. I also teach business owners how to create their own lucrative videos so they can make more money and have an impact by using my simple M.A.P. method.
CW: I love that! You’re so active in the Business Boutique community. How were you first introduced to us?
PK: A friend invited my husband and I to a Dave Ramsey event in January 2017. When he introduced you onstage and announced how we could preorder your new book, I was like, “I need that!” At the same time, my husband looked at me and said, “You should get that!”
I preordered your book, started listening to your podcast, read your blogs . . . Needless to say, I was hooked! You were like my friend and business coach all at the same time, even though I had never met you in person. In September 2017, I joined the Business Boutique Academy, and my business has grown ever since.
CW: That’s amazing! I love how your husband encouraged you to pursue this dream as well. How did your business grow after joining the Academy?
PK: Business Boutique has been such a blessing! Since joining the Academy, I’m on track to make $40,000 more this year in client work. The resources in the Academy are awesome! Before joining the Academy, I didn’t even have business cards. (Yes, totally embarrassing when a potential client would ask me for one.)
But the Academy gave me everything I needed to start my business. I was able to formulate my business plan, create a brand, improve my website, have the confidence to raise my prices, improve my work-life balance, and grow closer to God. Business Boutique has been a life changer for me and my family.
CW: Wow! Walk us through your journey. Where is your business today versus when you first launched?
PK: My business today is so different compared to just two years ago (before I joined the Academy). Before, I was comfortably working on client projects and the TV show. But during an Academy coaching call last year, you gave me the idea to make an online course. It was like a lightbulb turned on. I loved that idea! I hadn’t even thought about turning my business into an online business or how that could help me expand my reach and impact.
Since then, I’ve launched my YouTube channel (yup, I did it scared!), created social media business pages, launched another website, and now I’m making sales with my first online course!
I’m also launching my premium course in September of this year. It’s called “The M.A.P. to Lucrative Videos” and teaches my simple M.A.P. method to create videos that give you high impact and more money in your business.
CW: You’re crushing it! What has this business and the success you’ve experienced meant for you and your family?
PK: I feel like I have the best of both worlds. My business has given me the opportunity to work part time so I can be with my kids most of the week while still enjoying work on other days. It’s allowed us to go on family vacations to places like Italy and Maui. And my husband is thrilled because we could finally get new flooring in our house!
It’s really important to me to give back. My business has given me the opportunity to donate some services to a local nonprofit and help them increase their donations. It’s been pretty amazing!
CW: It sounds like a complete 180. What was the biggest obstacle you faced when launching your business and how did you overcome it?
PK: Launching my initial business was fairly smooth since I was already working on freelance jobs while I had my corporate position. However, when it came to working on my online course and launching the online business component, the biggest challenge was research.
Thankfully, the resources on research in the Business Boutique Academy equipped me with the information I needed. I talked with my target market on the phone, emailed them, sent surveys, and asked questions in a focus group. So far, the feedback from my customers has been great!
CW: People often underestimate the power of research. I’m so glad you didn’t! What advice would you give someone reading this post and dreaming about their own business idea?
PK: Starting out in business is a journey. And part of that path will take you down to the depths of a canyon that you have to climb out of. (As Anne of Green Gables would say, “I’m in the depths of despair!”) This is where the hard work of starting up a business or a new product sets in.
So, I would tell someone that when you’re in the depths of that canyon, it may feel like: Working late at night while your husband gets to binge a show on Netflix. Your kids asking you, “McDonalds again?” Your dog getting fat because you’re not walking him as much, and unbuttoning your jeans because apparently your dog isn’t the only who’s gaining weight. Those were my “depths of despair” experiences.
But in the midst of that, I would encourage people to remember two things: When you’re in the trenches, you should pray a lot and know you’re only down there temporarily. Jeremiah 29:11 is my favorite Bible verse, and it encouraged me during that time in my journey.
Once you’ve climbed out of that canyon, you’ll reach the top and life will get easier and so much better. You can look back and laugh about it while your business makes a positive impact on the world. So, press on and know that God is with you and the hard times are just temporary. It’ll be so worth it as you make a better life for you and your family.
CW: There is so much truth in that, Patricia. Thank you for that encouragement. What big dreams do you currently have for your business?
PK: I’m so excited to be able to help other entrepreneurs confidently grow their businesses with video. So many people feel overwhelmed with the whole video thing. But with some simple tactics you can make a professional video that gets amazing results. In fact, research shows that businesses that use video grow revenue 49% faster. And Forbes Magazine stated that businesses that don’t use video will “die out.” I don’t want that to happen!
So, my dream is to be able to empower millions of business owners all over the world to smile with confidence, push record, and make an even bigger impact with video! I’d like to continue doing this through my YouTube channel, online courses, being a guest on podcasts, speaking engagements, etc. I’m also excited to start my own podcast next year!
Y’all, I told you! Her story is amazing. Her grit and her passion are contagious. But what I love most about her story is her drive to learn and grow so that she could confidently build her business and live the life she always dreamed about.
This can be your story too. And I want to help you get there.
